Having a social media presence for your advisory practice is a necessity these days. But it can be daunting to put your business out in the social world. You may be worried that you are too busy to find content, that social is a waste of time, or that you’ll struggle to make fancy images or videos. Those are reasonable fears, but if you have the right tools to help you navigate the social media landscape, then you can easily master the terrain!
There are many reasons to use social media, but here are a few to keep in mind. Social media is a free channel and accessible to millions of people. If used properly you can gain clients from it. Here are some important stats you should be aware of if you are still only considering social:
50% of consumers said that seeing user-generated content would increase their chances of buying products through a brand's social media channels.
Social media is the most relevant advertising channel for 50% of Gen Z and 42% millennials.
There are 3.2 billion social media users- daily! That is 42% of the population.
LinkedIn performs 277% better than Facebook and Twitter when it comes to generating visitor-to-lead conversions.

According to these stats, social media is definitely something that you should be taking advantage of. To master social media, you will need the help of a few tools to stay organized and create engaging designs and videos. The first thing you need to determine is which social platforms you want to be on. The number one used social platform is Facebook, followed by Twitter and LinkedIn. I recommend using all three! It is easy as pie as long as you take advantage of these social tools.
1. Social Scheduler
A social scheduler is crucial in mastering the world of social media. You could schedule out your social posts in your outlook calendar or day planner, but let’s be honest, that will require a lot of work on your part, and that is not the goal. The goal is to schedule your social posts and walk away (unless you get a comment in which case you should respond to it quickly!). A social scheduler allows you to schedule multiple posts across multiple platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and more) all at one time. And you can schedule several weeks in advance. When dealing with social media, it is very important to stay organized, social moves fast and you want to be on top of your posts, so you stay ahead of the curve. Luckily, with a scheduler like Hootsuite it's easy.
2. Article saving platform
I used to bookmark EVERYTHING on my computer; recipes, articles, and websites. When I discovered Evernote, it changed my whole process of saving items for future use (no more scrolling forever in the bookmarks tab to find the avocado brownie recipe)! If you are trying to build your brand’s social presence you should be posting at least one engagement post a day. Engagement posts are strictly for obtaining engagement on your social channels. Engagement increases your brand awareness (which makes it easier to attract new clients), marketing reach, and ROI. For example, a financial advisor should post mostly financial based (credible) articles that your clients and potential clients would find interesting. While you are having your morning cup o’ joe and doing your usual scroll through articles in publications such as, Iris, FA, or Kiplinger, save the ones that you would be interested in using as an engagement post on your social feed with Evenote’s webclipper. Once you have your article saved you can add the link of the article to your social scheduler and poof! You've started your social media presence! Simple right??
3. Free stock photo's site
How many articles have you clicked on because the image representing the post was intriguing? I have done this thousands of times, the power of a photo right?! Using photo's in your posts on social are a MUST, no one wants to read a block of text! Most people are visual, so make sure to add an image to every social post that you schedule. One of the biggest worries people have about using photos from the internet is that they (most of the time) are not royalty free. Luckily, I have you covered. Here are 3 sites where you can get royalty free images: Unsplash, Pixabay, and Pexels. These sites are FREE, and they have thousands of professional quality photos. All you have to do is go to the site, search for a photo you want to use, and download it, that's it! NO STRINGS ATTACHED! Rare I know, but it is true.
4. Design platform
Speaking of images, our brains process them 60 thousand times faster than it processes words! This is another reason why you don’t want to post a bunch of text on your social channels! One of the best parts of social media is being able to design social posts from scratch! If you are not quite as jazzed about this as I am because you, (a) don’t have time to design from scratch, (b) don’t feel like you are creative, or (c) just aren’t sure what makes good design, then have no fear, I have a solution for you! Canva! With Canva you don’t have to worry about a, b, or c. First of all, Canva is a free platform! Second, they have hundreds of social templates that you can choose from, you can also upload your logo and your own photos to use as well (you know, those ones you downloaded from Pexels). Canva makes designing quick, easy, and fun!
5. Video hosting platform
Video is HUGE in marketing and social media right now, and for good reason, 72% of customers would rather learn about a product or service by way of video. No wonder video reaches people so much easier. Luckily, it’s easy to jump on this train. The first thing you should know about video is that you don't have to use a fancy camera to make quality videos. You can use your phone! The cameras in our phones these days rival some of the best cameras in the world. No matter what camera you decide to use, you definitely need to be hosting the video on a hosting platform like Vimeo or YouTube. Both are free and very easy to use. Hosting them on a platform gives the video a place to live and endures the weight of your server bandwidth, (i.e. you don’t want the video freezing or loading slowly!) as well as a whole host of other reasons. You can also post directly to social media with live videos. All you have to do is click the live button on the main page of your Facebook account and poof, you’re live! This is a great way to stay engaged with your clients and possibly win over some new ones with your shining personality!
